Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center

One of my April highlights was to join other members of The Mercer Society as we loaded a coach bus and headed to Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center.  "Shangri La represents a place of beauty, peace and enlightenment"  Among the 252 acres in Orange, Texas you will find "formal rooms" and "sculpture rooms".  I became young at heart while falling behind the group and enjoying an area that is actually designed for children.  Can you see why I would linger here?

If you are ready for quiet time, keep walking down the path toward the Bird Blind and Heronry.  You must be quiet to hear the calls of the nesting birds within Ruby Lake.

The lake is approximately 15 acres and provides a home to more than 17 species of birds where they are close to food supplies.  The Cypress trees protect the birds from predators while they are nesting.

The boat guides take passengers into the cypress swamps for nature discoveries.  While being educated about living in harmony with nature, it is impressive to learn that Shangri La Botanical Gardens has earned the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum certification for LEED®-NC .
If you are in the Houston area and looking for an enjoyable day trip, then become adventurous and travel about two hours for a completely satisfying opportunity to explore, discover and learn.  Enjoy!

Happiness and Your New Home

Jean Chatzky writes Back to Basics.  In the Feb/March issue of AARP, there is an exceptional article titled How to Buy Happiness .  All of her ideas can so easily be applied to Real Estate!

1.  Know what you treasure most.  -- it's good to actually make a list of the top 10 items you want in a home,  then arrange those treasured items from #1 being the most important and so forth.
2.  Bigger isn't better  --  I moved from a well arranged 1500 sq ft home that had storage in the completely floored attic space ... to a 3200 sq ft home with soaring ceilings and guess what ... there isn't any attic space what-so-ever other than the two water heaters and AC requirements for a Southern Texas home.  So guess where my Christmas/Easter/Harvest Decorations are, not to mention family heirlooms.  What did bigger accomplish for me?
3.  Don't go overboard --  I would add to her comments that nothing kills happiness like an unbalanced budget.  Period ... enough said!  One thing I promise my clients is to not push over their limits of where their spending habits will allow.  After all, what fun is life if we can't actually live it?
4.  Pay down your mortgage --  Could there be a better feeling than owning your home outright?

Let's get looking for Your New Home and keep in mind all of the Happiness suggestions!

Nest Your Space in Montgomery County, Texas

From The Best of your Life  published in the Feb/March AARP an article Give Yourself a Happiness Makeover has 10 important steps to improve our happiness.

  1. Nestle in the Right Neighborhood
  2. Start Shopping: Start Saving
  3. Make the Most of Your Morning
  4. Trim Your TV Time
  5. Get a Daily Dose of Friends
  6. Find Your Soul Mate
  7. Meet, Pray, Love
  8. Create a Sunny Sanctuary
  9. Gain Peace with a Pooch
  10. Ignite Your Passion for Compassion
Nestle in the Right Neighborhood --- Is at the top of the list.  Remember to call on Me, your Realtor, to help you find the nest you are looking for to call "Home."  Did you know that "people are generally happiest in sunny areas and on the water," or that you should look for neighborhoods with "sidewalks, meeting places and other characteristics that nudge you into social interaction?"  Also, "Green spaces and recreation also favors well-being."  Montgomery County in my part of Texas is just the place you need to live!  Whether it's blue skies over Lake Conroe or a combination of water and meeting places & shopping in The Woodlands,  I can help you find the neighborhood to nest your space!

Time Well Spent

This time last week:
With child in arms, I moved to the rocking chair.  My Munchkin started to hum because, you see, it became rote that I would start by singing "Jesus Loves Me," followed by "Rock-a-My-Soul." He was rested after Jesus Loves me, then as I started Rock-A his little fingers reached to knit through my hair. The hard realization hit ... this time tomorrow my Munchkin who stole my heart will be on his way back to Germany. Tears still sting my checks. But, I count my blessings and Pray for his Mother's safe trip out of Afghanistan.
So if you wonder where I've been keeping myself during Jan. and Feb. you see there have been balls thrown for Chloe (our chocolate lab), trips to Bouncing Bears, Incredible Pizza, Mercer Arboretum, and Old MacDonald's Farm. I've watched a toddler turn into an almost little boy (yesterday he attempted a skip) After all the activity I've been rocking my Munchkin! Now time to wash my face before he wakes up or his dad gets back from errand running.

Babies Don't Keep
I hope my children will look back on today
And see a mother who had time to play.
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up while we're not looking.
Dusting and scrubbing can wait 'till tomorrow
For babies grow fast we learn to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

Time flies when we are having fun.  I can't believe it's only been a week since my living room has turned from toddler safe and Family Folk music playing on Pandora, to simple quiet space.  Time to get back to the business of Real Estate! Let's go look for your Place to Call Home!
